Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel Season 1

3 days into the launch of Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, many players have attained the highest rank, Platinum Tier 1, in the current Season 1. This article will discuss the initial Master Duel metagame based on the collected deck lists shared by players that made Platinum Tier 1 and showcase some of their decks.

Metagame Analysis

Master Duel Season 1 uses a Forbidden and Limited List that is rather similar to the OCG 2021.04 format. The card pool is up till Lightning Overdrive and Deck Build Pack: Ancient Guardians, with some sparse cards from Duelist Pack: Duelists of Whirlwind.

Decks from the OCG 2021.04 format are a reasonable starting point to study the metagame, but there are also some notable difference. Zoodiac Ratpier, Zoodiac Barrage, Mystic Mine are forbidden and Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder is limited. This makes Zoodiac, one of the top decks during the OCG 2021.04 format, significantly weaker. Ranked Duel is also using a best-of-one format, akin to the YCS Japan. This makes Drytron and Eldlich much more tricky to deal with since strong tech cards against them are too niche to run in the Main Deck.

Another factor in the choice of decks would be the difficulty in obtaining UR cards. The optimal path to building a competitive deck would be to pick the “Link Generation” starter deck for Link Spider and purchase the 3 Special Bundle Deals. Then after having decided on which deck to build, focus on opening the respective Secret Pack. You may have to generate a SR card to unlock the Secret Pack. Ideally you would have opened most of the needed SR and UR from the packs, while the remaining can be completed by generating with Craft Points. Since UR and UR Craft Points are hard to come by, they become a limiting factor for F2P players.

Based on the small samples collected, Eldlich, Drytron, Virtual World, Lyrilusc and Tri-Brigade are the most commonly played decks that made Platinum Tier 1.

Eldlich is currently the most popular deck due to its low cost. The deck is made up of just a few core UR cards in the Main Deck. The Extra Deck is mostly used as fodder for Pot of Prosperity and Pot of Extravagance, and would only matter in a few situational games. This is a good starting deck to get a quick start in Ranked Duel and clear daily missions for gems.

Drytron, Virtual World and Tri-Brigade Lyrilusc could setup a winning board right on the first turn if the opponent do not have enough ‘hand traps’ to stop their combo, well-suited for the best-of-one format.

Zoodiac Tri-Brigade is a balance deck that have strong plays for both going first and going second. They could setup Tri-Brigade Revolt into Tri-Brigade Shuraig the Ominous Omen when going first, while having Zoodiac into Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder for a board wipe when going second.

These 5 are the recommended decks to go for if your aim is to hit Platinum Tier 1 with ease. On average, these 5 recommended decks took about 50 games to achieve Platinum Tier 1. Other decks will also be able to make Platinum Tier 1, but might take much more time and effort to grind and refine. Many of them took upwards of 80 to 100 games to reach Platinum Tier 1.

Below are 80 different decks that had made Platinum Tier 1. Rarity of the cards are shown to make it easier to consider the difficulty of acquiring the cards when building the deck. As this is just a few days into Season 1, it is very likely that many of these deck lists are not properly optimized. Nonetheless they are reasonable basic structure of the decks to start with, and you can adjust accordingly to your style and experience.

An important clarification, “Platinum Tier 1” is the official terminology used in Master Duel for their ranking placement. “Platinum Tier 1” in this article strictly refers to this ranking, and not about “Tier 1” in terms of tier list placement.

Update on 2022-01-24: Another 20 decks that made Platinum Tier 1 are added to the showcase below. Links to the deck lists on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Database are also available to aid in recognizing the cards by clicking on [db] beside the deck name.
