How to change color FFXIV Chocobo

Your chocobo companion is special and you want it to stand out from the crowd, right? In the midst of a sea of desert yellow Chocobos, yours could be an adorable royal blue Chocobo! A regal purple! A… green mud? The choice is yours, so here’s how to change the beautiful coat of your chocobo.

What colors are available?

The colors available for your chocobo are (mostly) the same colors you can paint your clothes in your game. Of course, some exceptions include mold tabs with ‘general purpose’ color names. This is the part with ‘pure white’, ‘pure black’, metallic colors, pastels and a few others. Unfortunately, shiny metal chocobos are not allowed. I guess you can always give them a chocobo-style armor if you want that shiny look.

If you’re looking for a reference to see what your chocobo should look like, I found this Tumblr post with screenshots of the game in different colors. This must have taken a long time to gather and is definitely a much appreciated resource!

If you want to quickly skim and compare them, use the archive view, just be aware that for some colors the preview is just text. Be sure to click on those color names if you’re interested or if you’d like to see the side view of any Chocobos.

Can you create a new color for your chocobo?

In patch 5.21, new colors were added, available through Ishgard restore content. Some of these are in the fancy dyes section (Gunmetal Black, Pearl White and Metallic Brass), probably because they have the same metallic look as other colors in the class. I don’t think these colors will go well with chocobos, at least for now.

However, some of these colors have been added to the regular color sections. New reds include Ruby Red and Cherry Pink. The yellow tab now includes Canary Gold and Vanilla Gold. Finally, in the blue, they added dragon blue and turquoise blue. Maybe these are the new chocobo options?

My testing shows that no, these are not the available chocobo colors. My attempt to get a ruby red chocobo resulted in the old blood red color (more details below in the color change mechanics). Hopefully in the future we can get such brilliant feathers for our feathered friends.

How to change the color of your chocobo

Once you’ve unlocked your chocobo companion, you can instantly change its color, as long as you have access to the chocobo cage (in the player’s house) and purchase the required fruits. from the market. This is probably the easiest way for new, low-level players to join FC with its estates and stables.

If you don’t have FC or if he doesn’t have real estate, you can also visit Chocobo Stables if you have an apartment. Each apartment complex has its own stable outside the building where you can interact with your chocobo friend.

The method of changing its plumage is to feed it fruit, which is grown in the garden and is regularly sold in the market. Seeds for growing these fruits are available from your Grand Company Hunt Billmaster for 15 Allied Seals. They give good yields, especially with Shroud topsoil, but they have a two-day growing period. Be careful not to dry them out.

You’ll have the easiest time growing them in your outdoor garden, but you can also manage with flower pots in the apartment. If you can’t wait two days, or if you don’t have or don’t like gardening, the easiest way is to buy all the fruit you want from the market. After selecting ‘Tend to My Chocobo’, you’ll want to select ‘Feed’ and then give it fruit to begin the process of changing the coat.

You will then have a six-hour period after which your chocobo will change color depending on the type of fruit it has eaten. I usually feed my chocobo friend all the fruit at once, but technically you have a full six hours to do so. You can only feed one fruit at a time, so just be aware that it’s a bit tedious to click.

You can see how much time is left before the colors change by going back and checking the ‘Tend to My Chocobo’ window.

The best tool out there is the FFXIV Chocobo Color Calculator, created by Chop Chop. You enter the initial chocobo color and the desired chocobo color, and the calculator will tell you how much food for each chocobo to feed it.

The default chocobo color is ‘Desert Gold’, but if you’re not sure what your chocobo’s current color is, check your companion’s details in the ‘Appearance’ tab. From Stability, this is the ‘Details View’ section. If your partner is unstable, you can check from the menu. Characters > Companions > Appearance. This navigation will only be accessible when your Chocobo is not stationary.

Resovle problem

If you are not getting the color you want, there are a few things to check. When you try again, use your new color as the starting color or reset your chocobo to the default ‘Desert Gold’. To do this, feed him a hen lemon. You can pick up Han Lemon from the market very cheaply (at least on my server). This way you don’t have to wait another six hours when resetting the color; Just exit the chocobo stable interface and then come back in.

If your initial color is the default desert yellow, then it is likely that you have exceeded the limit of the RGB values (0-255) somewhere while feeding. Be sure to follow the recommended feeding order listed at the bottom of the Color Calculator Results page. There’s also a helpful checklist you can cross off as you go so you don’t lose track.

If you’ve colored your chocobo before, it’s possible that the chocobo’s original color did not accurately represent its ‘true’ color (i.e. its RGB values). I recommend resetting with Han Lemon before trying again, as his RGB values will then be correct.

Mechanism of color change

Each color has an associated set of RGB values, listed here. Your chocobo example starts with Desert Yellow, with an RGB value of (219, 180, 87). Higher numbers result in lighter, brighter colors, while lower numbers result in darker, deeper colors.

One way you can change the chocobo’s coat is to feed it fruit while it’s still alive. Each fruit increases or decreases the RGB values, so a certain amount of fruit takes you from the initial value to the target value.

Fruitincrease (+5)decrease (-5)
Apple XelphatolRedBlue blue
an ordinary pearGreenRed green
O’Ghomorro Barrybluered, green

Of course, there are only so many color options available, but there are many other value combinations, so if your chocobo’s RGB value doesn’t exactly match one of the lists, an approximation will be performed to produce the closest color .

So I tried to see if a new paint color would be an option for our chocobo. By maximizing the red value and minimizing the green and blue values (255, 0, 0), that produces a very bright, vibrant ruby red. Unfortunately, the result is a pretty far blood red (145, 59, 48), so I think it’s safe to say that the new paint isn’t chocobo approved.

It should also be noted that (255, 0, 0) appears to be the ‘true’ color of my chocobo, not (145, 59, 48) of its blood red phenotype. When I changed his color I calculated the number of berries needed to go from his ‘true’ color to lilac (131, 105, 105) and I had no problems.

I used 21 Doman Plums, 2 Mamook Pears, and 2 O’Ghomorro Berries (-125, +105, +105) against the calculator, with 12 Doman Plums, 6 Walnuts, and 4 Sildales Pineapple ( -10, +50, +70). That would leave me at (245, 50, 70), which I suspect will manifest itself in the form of something like Colibri Pink or Coral Pink. This can explain some color conversion errors and is a good reason to use Hahn Lemon to reset the RGB values if you cannot achieve the desired color.

summary

Have fun with your chocobo and change its color if you haven’t tried it before. If something goes wrong, you can always reset it to the default ‘Desert Gold’ using Han Lemon. Remember to use a color calculator and follow the feeding order for the most effective (and least boring) results.

I’m curious, what color chocobo do you have? And what influenced your decision? Let me know in the comments section.
