Mark of Cain is a popular phrase that originated in the story of Adam and Eve in the bible. It was believed that if someone tried to do any type of harm to Cain, the damage would come back to that individual sevenfold!
These tattoos are great for Christians and people who believe in a straightforward sign, and they see God and their religion as higher power.. Want a tattoo that is noticeable as well as straightforward? This one can be your first go-to choice if you want a masculine design
The mark of Cain is one of those biblical curiosities that people sometimes ask about.. In Genesis 4, when Cain is worried that people will find him and kill him to avenge his murder of Abel, God replies: “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And Yahweh put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him” (Genesis 4:15, ESV).
In his commentary on Genesis, Gordon Wenham says, “The nature of Cain’s sign or mark has been the subject of endless inconclusive speculation.” Since the sign is meant to deter people who might attack Cain, the majority of writers have concluded “that the mark of Cain must be something about him that shows he has divine protection, e.g., a tattoo, special hairstyle, or the like.” Wenham admits that there is little evidence for any of the suggestions, but thinks the “simplest” is the idea that Cain’s name is itself the sign, since it “sounds somewhat like” the Hebrew verb “shall be punished.” That seems like a reach. An explanation of Cain’s name was given at the beginning of chapter 4 (it is from the verb “acquire” or “gain”), and there is no hint in 4:15 that the sign has any connection with it
In another commentary, Bruce Waltke asserts (with no reason offered) that “This is apparently a protective tattoo.” John Calvin is characteristically more restrained and simply says, “It may suffice for us, that there was some visible token which should repress in the spectators the desire and the audacity to inflict injury.”. One suggestion I have not seen, but which seems to me fairly obvious, is that the “mark” was astral—a sign in the heavens
The Hebrew word for mark (‘Oth, אות) could mean a sign, an omen, a warning, or a remembrance. The mark of Cain is God’s promise to offer Cain divine protection from premature death with the stated purpose of preventing anyone from killing him.
The mark of Cain is God’s promise to offer Cain divine protection from premature death with the stated purpose of preventing anyone from killing him.. The biblical story may have intended to explain why a certain tribe, called Cain, had a special tattoo mark and why this tribe always severely avenged any murdered member
The brothers made sacrifices to God, but God favored Abel’s sacrifice instead of Cain’s. Cain then murdered Abel out of jealousy, whereupon God punished Cain by condemning him to a life of wandering.
There has been much speculation about the mark of Cain (Genesis 4:15). What was the mark that the Creator placed on him as a protective sign? To answer this question, more information about Cain’s context is needed
He was one of the “mighty men of old.” His descendants were craftsmen, some of whom worked metal (Genesis 4). This places Cain in the Neolithic Period, between 5500 and 3000 B.C
Genesis presents contradictory views about Cain’s father. Genesis 4:1 says, “Adam knew/lay (yadah) with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.” It should be noted that the Hebrew and the Greek versions do not explicitly name Adam in this verse
The Mark of Cain originated from the stories of Adam and Eve in the Hebrew Bible, is one of the earliest mysteries, a strange incident that people have wondered about for eras.. The Mark of Cain in the Bible is the mark of God’s protection, not curse
If someone tries to murder Cain, then the damage would come back seven-fold.. Some traditional Scriptures view this as a “physical mark” while others see it as a symbol that was placed only on Cain
Thus, there is no good reason to believe that Cain’s descendants would have got the mark in the form of dark skin colour.. Cain, the firstborn son of Adam and Eve, killed his brother Abel in a fit of envious fury or rage
In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”. Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand
Genesis 4 recounts the first murder of human history. Cain murders his brother Abel because of the jealousy he felt over his offering to God being rejected while can’s was accepted
There is much for Christians to learn about how to live life in the midst of ongoing sin. God is more than happy to give us second, third, and even four hundred and thirty eighth chances because he is gracious and kind
But there’s another aspect to this narrative that has raised numerous eyebrows throughout history, including mine. As part of the consequences of his sin, Cain is destined to live his life as a fugitive and a wanderer
After Cain killed his brother Abel, God declared to Cain, “Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you
In response, Cain lamented, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me” (Genesis 4:13-14)
The nature of the mark on Cain has been the subject of much debate and speculation. The Hebrew word translated “mark” is ‘owth and refers to a “mark, sign, or token.” Elsewhere in the Hebrew Scriptures, ‘owth is used 79 times and is most frequently translated as “sign.” So, the Hebrew word does not identify the exact nature of the mark God put on Cain

The Mark of Cain or Mark as it is referred to is an infamous mark that grants the Bearer supernatural powers and abilities, including powering up the infamous weapon that Cain used to kill his brother, The First Blade, but in reality the Mark is actually a seal used to bind and lock the Darkness away. The Mark’s true source of power comes from The Darkness.
She began to corrupt Lucifer and augment his pride and jealously of humanity. Lucifer then rid himself of the Mark by passing it onto Cain, who began to suffer its effects by becoming blood lusted to kill any living creature.
Russian prison tattoos are a portal into a dark world, one that is really only understood by the people that exist within it. From an outsider’s perspective, the aesthetic of these tattoos have always intrigued me
Knives, Women, Spider Webs, Guns, Churches and other Russian icons all mean something different when they are put onto the body of a Russian criminal. In no way am I glorifying any of their acts of violence, but I enjoy looking at the decorated skin of humans that exist on the fringe! The person who made it his life mission to catalog the meaning behind Russian Underworld tattoo art was Arkady Bronnikov, the senior expert in criminalistics at the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs for over 30 years., and you can pick up a book of these photos and more of his insights called Russian Criminal Tattoo Police Files

Tattoos have a variety of meanings ranging from power to station in the prison caste.. Lambert mixes interviews with prisoners as well as non-prisoners resulting in a nicely rounded piece
The scriptures regarding Cain and his mark are found in the fourth chapter of Genesis. The verses leading up to God’s willingness to protect him are important so that we can understand what the Bible teaches and what it does not reveal
The Lord, after his response, confronts him with his grievous sin and it is then that we come upon the infamous mark.. “Why have you done this terrible thing? Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground, like a voice calling for revenge
Such a command will be given, however, right after Noah leaves the ark after the floodwaters subside (Genesis 9:6). An additional (and likely more important) reason he was allowed to live is so that other humans would be warned of God’s view and judgment on sin.

Mark of Cain: The Language of Russian Criminal Tattoos. What encrypted visual communication has to do with the Russian justice system.
Its curious subject — the poetic, fading art form and language of Russian criminal tattoos — is also the subject of filmmaker Alix Lambert’s 2001 documentary, The Mark of Cain, which is now available online under a Creative Commons license.. Lambert traveled on a shoestring budget to document the complex social hierarchy of Russia’s prison system, where inmates use highly symbolic tattoo art as a mark of rank
The unique visual language of the tattoos encrypts everything you need to know about an inmate without ever asking, from the number of convictions an inmate has to his rank in the crime world.. The Mark of Cain explores this fascinating subculture and its duality — its role in prison survival on the one hand and, on the other, the permanent mark it leaves on inmates as they try to reintegrate into society — though a layered look at everything from the actual creation of tattoo ink to the devastating conditions of the prisons to the intimate first-hand stories of prisoners revealed in hard-earned interviews.
Our editors will review what you’ve submitted and determine whether to revise the article.. Cain, in the Bible (Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament), firstborn son of Adam and Eve who murdered his brother Abel (Genesis 4:1–16)
He murdered Abel and was banished by the Lord from the settled country. Cain feared that in his exile he could be killed by anyone, so the Lord gave him a sign for his protection and a promise that if he were killed, he would be avenged sevenfold.
The story also may explain why that tribe lived the nomadic rather than the settled life. Some biblical critics believe the tribe of Cain was the Kenites.
