Our only agenda is to publish the truth so you can be an informed participant in democracy.. This popular quote is often attributed to Ayn Rand — but she didn’t say it
“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me,” reads the quote attributed to Rand, a philosopher and novelist who wrote the books “The Fountainhead” and “Atlas Shrugged.”. The problem is Rand never said that — at least not directly.
(Read more about our partnership with Facebook.) But it’s certainly not the first account to misattribute the quote to Rand.. “This is an attribution to Rand that has really spread all over the internet,” said Ben Bayer, a fellow at the Ayn Rand Institute
“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.”. For most of recorded history, women have not been particularly encouraged push boundaries, despite having had to deal with most social and political boundaries
We are supposed to ask for permission when we want something, to wait patiently in line. Thanks to the great pioneer women before us and the changing political climate, we have opportunities now, more than ever.
However, the landscape for women is still not perfect – systems are hard to break, and many of our institutions are run on exclusivity. But when it comes time to getting what’s yours, the question should always be: who is going to stop you?
“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” —Ayn Rand. So many times in my life I have been in a situation where I have asked myself, “Can I do this?” or “Will they let me do this?” They could be anyone- the powers that be, a boss, or even my peers
Do I think I can do it? Am I smart enough? Do I believe in my abilities? I mean it’s completely normal to have self-doubts now and then. We ask ourselves if we might be biting off more than we can chew, or if perhaps we aren’t qualified to tackle something
No, what I’m talking about is constantly doubting yourself; lacking that confidence in your ability to succeed. She wrote the book, “Atlas Shrugged” and others, but she is known for her philosophy on Objectivism
Dear Quote Investigator: The Newsfeed section of the Time magazine website recently wrote about a successful fashion retailer which was selling a shirt called an “Unstoppable Muscle Tee” that displayed a quotation attributed to a top-selling author and controversial philosopher:. “The question isn’t who is going to let me, it’s who is going to stop me.” — Ayn Rand
My reaction was: Are these really the words of Ayn Rand? I have searched for them and cannot find them in any of her novels or essays?. Quote Investigator: QI has been unable to find this precise quotation in the writings of Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand’s main character, Howard Roark, attended a school called The Stanton Institute of Technology to learn about architecture. He refused to follow the design precepts that he considered anachronistic and wrong-headed, and he was expelled from the school for insubordination.
The quote is a paraphrase of dialogue in one of Ayn Rand’s novels.. On 20 March 2017, President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump, who owns a branded retail chain, tweeted an image of a quote attributed to novelist Ayn Rand:
Trump is not the first one to attribute the quote to Rand. In 2013, the young women’s clothing line Forever 21 put the quote on a tank top (the company no longer sells the shirt).
She never said or wrote exactly those words — but there is a similar passage in her 1943 book The Fountainhead, said Onkar Ghate, chief content officer and senior fellow at the Ayn Rand Institute.. In an e-mail, Ghate told us the passage is part of dialogue between the protagonist, Howard Roark, and another character:
“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” Ayn Rand. I think I’ve always said things like this to myself as I was growing up
Now, as a woman in her 40’s with an incredible modern family and 5 children I can claim, I have certainly grown out of that phase and am hungry for wisdom and perspective from others. I now know that I will never be the smartest, the savviest, or the most experienced business person in the room
So, today this particular quote has a very different meaning for me. It resonates with my drive and work ethic and lives in a place of passion and hunger to be the best and most successful by expressing gratitude for every opportunity, building relationships, connecting with like-minded peers, and being respectful of others time.
