Are you really honored and humbled? Or honored and proud?. My latest pet peeve – and I’ve got a lot of them – is the misuse of the phrase honored and humbled in social media posts, including far too many of them on LinkedIn
While I’m sure that most of these posters are truly honored, their social media activity suggests something other than humbled. One who is humble is marked by meekness or modesty in behavior, attitude, or spirit; not arrogant or prideful
In my own not-so-humble opinion, posters should own this feeling, not hide behind a hackneyed phrase that misrepresents their true intent.. If you are truly humbled, take a pass on the promotional message, or better yet, give the credit to someone else
You’ve won the award – the one you worked so hard for. You never really thought this day would come and now you’re standing on a stage about to accept your trophy.
“I am humbled” is a phrase that people use in response to praise. It is a way of expressing that you don’t feel worthy of the level of praise that you’re receiving and were not expecting it
– Not proud or not believing that you are important.. When you say that you’ve been “humbled” by praise, it means that you feel that the praise is befitting someone more important than yourself.
Since this came up again in episode 15, i thought i’d share my comment on the humbled vs. I do agree that “honored” is a perfectly fine word to use in this context
I think when someone says they are humbled, they mean that the honor / money / whatever they are receiving exceeds by a large amount that which they feel they deserve, thus making them feel humble in comparison.

Few phrases that have slipped into the English lexicon annoy me more than things like “I am humbled to accept this reward”, it’s a misuse of words. More importantly humility is a great leadership trait, which many introverts possess without realising; where many others claim to have humility while demonstrating how their arrogance and oversized ego make them poor leaders.
